A plant of the Nyctaginaceae family, cultivated and naturalized in Madeira. It has flowers of very variable color, but usually purplish-violet, and ovate lanceolate or ovate leaves, subcordate at the base. The root of this plant is purgative, but it is not used in Madeira.

Boqueirão (Smaris insidiator). A small fish of the Maenidae family, caught in the waters of Madeira. Once very common, it is now a rarity in the markets, not being a fish of great value. They are caught from the coast to the open sea, and from the surface to about 150 fathoms deep. Sometimes it is seen at a great distance from the land, mixed with sardines, herring, horse mackerel, and mackerel.
