Baldy (Dr. José Maria)
Appointed civil governor and military commander of Madeira on March 9, 1858, when he held the position of director of Public Works, having taken office on April 26 of the same year. He left honorable traditions in the superior administration of this district, despite the short period of his government. He was a doctor and lecturer at the University of Coimbra, a field marshal, and a peer of the realm. He was born in Lisbon on May 16, 1800, and died in Coimbra on September 4, 1870. He was the son of the distinguished musician and composer João José Baldy.
