History

Baião

It is an ancient family surname in this archipelago and particularly on the island of Porto Santo, although it is now almost extinct. Belchior Baião, of noble lineage, was the first of this surname to settle in Madeira. This family had an entailed estate in Porto Santo and was the patron of a chapel in the parish church, which is still known as the morgada chapel. Until a few years ago, it retained the characteristic stamp of Manueline constructions, being certainly the only part of the parish church that remained from the original construction.
