Four terrestrial worms, says Johnson, have been identified in Madeira, including the earthworm. As for marine worms, more than 240 species are known, collected by Professor P. Langerhans. The new species were well illustrated by this naturalist in the Zeitschrift für wissenchaftliche Zoologie (1879-1884). The largest and most beautiful of the marine worms of Madeira is the Amphinome carunculata, a species provided with stinging bristles.
