Vasconcelos e Sá (João Augusto de)
He was born in this city on July 9, 1880, at a time when his father commanded the artillery battery stationed in São Tiago. He was the son of then Captain Luis Augusto de Vasconcelos e Sá and D. Maria Algeraz de Vasconcelos e Sá. He is one of the most appreciated contemporary poets and the author of the poetry books 'Um livro' and 'Rimas pobres'. He wrote the famous song 'Margarida vai á fonte', which was extraordinarily successful. João Augusto de Vasconcelos e Sá, a former cavalry officer, was one of the 289 political deportees who, after the Jornada de Monsanto, were imprisoned in the Lazareto de Gonçalo Aires, in Funchal (volume I, page 350).
