Úzel (Baron of) / Úzel (Barão de)

Luís Alexandre Ribeiro Mendonça, baron of Úzel, was born in this city in the year 1839 and died on June 2, 1903. He was the son of Marcelino Ribeiro de Mendonça, whom we discussed in this volume on page 197, and held the positions of chief officer of the Civil Government and professor at our Lyceum. He had a deep knowledge of the French and English languages, leaving some unpublished compositions in prose and verse in the former. He distinctly cultivated literature, and many of his writings are scattered throughout the newspapers. In the Flores da Madeira, some of his compositions can be found.
