Traste
It is the earth or stone and lime wall that borders the levadas and is also known today in Madeira by the designation of mainel. In the letter of King D. João, dated May 8, 1493, reference is made to 'terradas & trastes das levadas', from which it can be seen that the term traste, with the meaning of mamei, was formerly used in Portugal, where it seems to be currently forgotten.
