Trabalhos Forçados

The penalty of forced labor on state works was applied in certain cases to criminals who appeared before the courts of Funchal. The forced laborers had iron chains attached to their legs by a ring, and these same chains were ordered to be made by the Municipal Council, as can be inferred from a resolution taken in a session on November 9, 1824.
