Thomson (Sir William)
This distinguished English scientist, who was given the title of Lord Kelvin in 1892, was in Madeira in 1874, when this island was connected to Brazil and Portugal by means of the submarine telegraph. He married Miss Francis Ana Blandy here, daughter of the English merchant Carlos Blandy. The marriage took place at the British consulate in Funchal on June 24, 1874, when W. Thomson was 49 years old and already a widower, and the bride was 36.
