Tavares (Joaquim da Silva)
Distinguished Portuguese cecidologist who has greatly contributed to making known the zoocecidias of Portugal, Madeira, and other countries. He is a member of the Society of Jesus, a member of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon, and has taught in Portugal, Brazil, and Spain. He wrote three contributions to the study of the zoocecidias of Madeira, all published in Broteria, the first in 1903, the second in 1905, and the last in 1914 (1921). According to Mr. Padre Tavares, of about 80 known zoocecidias in Madeira, most are the work of aphids or eriophyids.
