Spilsbury (F. B.)
He was a surgeon on the Favorita, a ship of the British navy, and in the account he published of his trip to the west coast of Africa, he refers to his stay in Madeira, where he stayed from October 12 to 19, 1805. He speaks of the hospitality of the inhabitants of the island, the leprosy, which he says is common, the conical-shaped caps, the flowers and fruits made by the nuns, and the thefts committed by the soldiers.
