Sousa
There seem to be two branches of this surname: one comes from Rui de Sousa, a nobleman of the household of King D. João II, who married Constança Cabral in this island, daughter of Diogo Cabral and Brites Gonçalves da Câmara, daughter of Zargo; the other derives from Antão Alvares de Sousa, a noble knight, who settled in Santa Cruz around 1480.
Garcia Homem de Sousa, son-in-law of Zargo, had a daughter named Leonor Homem, who married Duarte Pestana.
