Humanitarian Society of the District of Funchal / Sociedade Humanitária do Distrito do Funchal

Under this name, a society was founded in this city on June 5, 1858, with the aim, as indicated in the first article of its statutes, of 'saving people in shipwrecks on the beaches of Funchal and its surroundings, and saving people in epidemics, fires, and other similar calamities in the city of Funchal and its outskirts'. This society, whose statutes were approved by decree on January 13, 1862, was founded by a group of the most distinguished individuals of Funchal. We believe it had ephemeral duration.
