On October 19, 1858, a select assembly met at the São Lourenço Palace to lay the foundations of an association aimed at promoting and supporting primary education in this district, with several speakers addressing the assembly. The Infante D. Luis, later king of Portugal, attended this meeting and declared himself the protector of the new association.
