Sarraut (Alberto)
Minister of the Colonies of the French Republic. He arrived in Madeira aboard the cruiser Gueydon on October 17, 1921, and disembarked around 2 o'clock in the afternoon, being greeted on board by the Civil Governor, the Port Captain, and the Military Commander. The appropriate military honors were paid to him at the dock, and he then proceeded to the São Lourenço Palace, where he was received by the Civil Governor and the General Secretary. Accompanied by the civil and military authorities, he visited the Angústias cemetery, depositing a wreath with a dedication on the tomb-monument of the sailors of the Surprise, who died when the ship was torpedoed in Funchal Bay. The Governor also laid a wreath at the same monument, and speeches were given at the cemetery by M. Sarraut, the Civil Governor, and the Vice-President of the Municipal Executive Committee. An infantry force and another from the Republican Guard paid military honors to M. Sarraut at the cemetery. The Gueydon left the port of Funchal for Brest on the 18th.
