Saldanha da Gama (João)

He was appointed Governor and Captain-General of this archipelago on May 4, 1715, and took office on June 27 of the same year. He was born in 1674 and died in 1754. Little is known about his administration in Madeira, but he distinguished himself as a military man in various campaigns and, as viceroy of India, provided exemplary governance, rendering the most remarkable services to his country there.
