Romeiros (Casas de)

To shelter the pilgrims, houses were known to have been built in the following locations: Monte, Santo Antonio da Serra, and Piedade (Ponta de S. Lourenço).

The Romeiros' house in Monte already existed between 1780 and 1790, and it was declared in a council session on May 31, 1822, to belong to the council's assets. Nevertheless, the Council decided, in a session on November 18, 1846, to have a building erected next to the church of Monte, 'as a shelter for travelers and to house the animals,' a building that we do not know if it was ever built.

The house of the pilgrims of Santo António da Serra was built in 1808, at the expense of various English subjects, and is now in ruins. It was administered until 1832 by English commissions, in which the names of Penfold, Selby, Leacock, Taylor, and Gordon appear.

There are no traces today of the house intended to shelter the devotees who went on pilgrimages to the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, in the parish of Caniçal.
