Pterégio
This disease, also called pterygium, was identified as common in Madeira about 170 years ago by Dr. Heberden, an English physician. Dr. Alfredo Ernesto Rodrigues, a distinguished specialist in eye diseases, declared that it continues to appear on a large scale on the island, characterized by a thickening of part of the conjunctiva, which almost always manifests itself in the inner corner of the eye (1921).
