Provedor do Concelho

F. Januário Cardoso de Melo was the first, and we believe the only individual, to hold this position in Funchal, having been appointed by decree on June 21, 1834, and taking office at the Prefecture of the Province on August 16 of the same year. In 1835, the 'provedores' began to be called 'administradores do concelho'.
