Príncipe (Rua do)

Before the Republic was proclaimed on this island, the street that runs alongside the Ribeira de Santa Luzia and extends from the Calçada do Cidrão or João Sabino da Costa to the Rua dos Netos had this name. It is now called Rua 5 de Outubro. We believe that this name was intended to pay homage to the Prince Regent D. João VI, but we have never found any indication to that effect in the records of the Municipal Council of this city.
