The Municipal Chamber of Funchal once had a preacher who was paid a salary and was obliged to deliver sermons on official festivities. In 1831, the priest fr. José de Jesus was appointed as the preacher of the Chamber, and before him, fr. João José da Purificação had held that position, appointed in 1829, with an annual salary of 24,000 réis.
