V. Academies. This association was founded in 1908, due to the initiative of some ladies from Funchal, and has statutes approved by the Civil Governor of the District on October 24, 1908. Its purpose is to establish dispensaries to provide milk and medicine to poor and sick children under twelve years old, the internment of these children when they have no mothers, or when their mothers cannot raise them, to promote child hygiene, etc.

This benevolent institution spent the amount of 1,090,220 réis in the economic year of 1916 to 1917. Its management was working on creating a Kindergarten, intended to take in children abandoned in the streets or confined at home while their mothers are engaged in their daily work outside their homes.
