Pinto (Dr. Deâo João Joaquim)
He was born in the parish of Porto Moniz on March 4, 1851. He obtained a bachelor's degree in theology from the University of Coimbra, completing his degree in 1879 and was ordained a priest in the same year. He was a professor at the Archbishop's Seminary of Évora when in 1888 he was presented with a canonry of the Funchal Cathedral and later elevated to the position of dean of the same Cathedral. Among us, he was a professor and vice-rector of the Seminary, vicar-general, and at times, governor of the diocese, having performed other service commissions, such as president of the Administrative Commission of the Holy House, etc. He was a man of broad knowledge and great dedication to study, especially well-versed in theological matters, of which he was a distinguished professor. In addition to his intellectual gifts, he possessed great austerity of character, which earned him the consideration and esteem of his fellow countrymen. He was the editor of the newspaper a Verdade and published Documents for the subsidy to the study of Portuguese civil and ecclesiastical law, 1894, 2 vols. of 379 and 537 pages, and Gospel of St. Matthew, 1901, 136 pages. He died in this city on February 11, 1919.
