History

Phelps (Rua do)

Connects Rua do Bettencourt with Rua do Carmo, now Rua Costa Ferreira, and was opened in 1856, at the expense of the English merchant José Phelps, who resided in the large building where the commercial house of Krohn Brothers & Co. and later the Junta Geral (1921) were accommodated. In 1788, there was the commercial house of Phelps & Co. in Madeira, and in 1804 that of Phelps, Page & Co. In February 1920, three female descendants of the Phelps family branch were in Funchal, and around the same time, the building that had belonged to José Phelps was sold to Sardinha & Co. and Joaquim José da Silva Vieira.
