Pau Branco (Notelaea excelsa)

A tree of the Oleaceae family, with persistent, leathery, glabrous, and entire leaves, white flowers, grouped in short, axillary or extra-axillary racemes, solitary or paired, and elliptical fruits, initially red, then violet. It is found in the mountains of S. Vicente, Boaventura, and Porto do Moniz, but is almost extinct on the island. It produces white or slightly pinkish wood, very hard, heavy, and capable of good polishing, which is still used for press screws and ship keels.
