Outeiros

There were some in Funchal in the 18th century, as clearly seen in the Poetic Collection of Professor Francisco Manuel de Oliveira, in which there is an ode and two sonnets made for hills in honor of Senhora da Luz, the protector of studies on this island. We heard from some old people that it was customary on certain occasions for the poets of the land to gather at the convent of Santa Clara in order to gloss the themes given by the nuns, some of whom cultivated the muses.
