Oliveira Paixão (José Joaquim de)
He was a native of Portugal but resided for many years in this city, where he came as a violet from the great theater of Funchal, ordered to be demolished in 1832 by the governor D. Álvaro de Sousa de Macedo. Oliveira Paixão was a distinguished composer of sacred music, and until a few years ago, many of his musical compositions were performed in the churches of this diocese.
