History

Oldenburg (Prince of) / Oldenburgo (Principe de)

Prince Nicolau Frederico Augusto de Oldenburg, lieutenant general of the Russian army, was in Madeira for about two years (1884-1885), becoming well known among us for the lavish and grandiose life he led, the dazzling parties held at his residence, and the acts of philanthropy he frequently practiced.

It was he who had the French translation of Herculano's novel Eurico, the Presbyter published in Paris, done by the Viscountess of Nogueiras.

Prince Oldenburg resided at the 'Vigia' estate and had in his service two Cossacks, excellent riders, who were always looked at with curiosity by the inhabitants of Funchal whenever they went out for a ride. He died in Geneva in January 1886.
