History

Noronha (António Manuel de)

It was on March 26, 1822, that the royal charter appointed him Governor and Captain-General of Madeira, and he took office on April 22 of the same year. He requested his resignation, citing ill health, on February 4, 1823. He was the governor of this archipelago when King John VI dissolved the courts and abrogated the Constitution, proclaiming himself an absolute king. He was replaced by D. Manuel de Portugal e Castro.

In 1852, he was granted the title of Viscount of Santa Cruz, a parish and town of this island.
