Norman (Dr. Alfred Merle)

Distinguished English zoologist, already deceased, who visited Madeira in 1897 and 1908. The English naturalist Kirkpatrick (see this name) dedicated the Merlia Normani to him, a curious sponge found by the Madeiran naturalist A. C. de Noronha in the seas of Porto Santo. Works: The Land Isopoda of Madeira (1899) and The Polyzoa of Madeira and Neighbouring Islands (Linnean's Society's Journ.-Zool., XXX, 1909).
