This well-known French politician and literary figure, who was one of the greatest orators of his time, was in this island from January 26 to March 4, 1844, due to his wife's health. He disembarked in Funchal on a day of violent storm, risking his life and that of his fellow travelers. He wrote and published in France an extensive letter addressed to the Cambridge Camden Society, which became famous.
