Missão Marquês de Pombal

It was created on March 21, 1913, and its purposes are the same as those of the association "O Vintém das Escolas", to which it is subordinate, established in Lisbon in 1901, at the initiative of the late José de Moura Barata Feio Terenas. From the statutes of "O Vintém das Escolas", it is seen that this institution is intended for the promotion of liberal and civic education, with the express purposes of spreading education among the children of the people, promoting the moral and intellectual development and progress of the working classes, assisting and supporting the provenly poor child, promoting the federation of free teaching schools, and establishing prizes for teachers and students who prove themselves worthy of them. It is also in the program of the same institution to establish work scholarships, popular schools, and libraries, and to hold literary and scientific lectures and conferences. The "Missão Marquês de Pombal" supports a school in Funchal, established on Santa Maria Street, which currently (1921) has 40 students, but initially had an attendance of 105 students of both sexes, and its revenues come from the fees of the members and from dances, bazaars, etc., which are held from time to time.
