Mendes

Martim Mendes de Vasconcelos, sent by D. João I to marry Helena Gonçalves da Câmara in Madeira, daughter of Zargo, was one of the first settlers of the island, having had large estates in S. Martinho, near the Socorridos stream, and in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos. Joane Mendes de Brito was another early settler who had an estate in the parish of Campanário.
