Meimendro (Hyosciamus albus, subespecie major)

A plant of the Solanaceae family with incised-lobed leaves and funnel-shaped yellow flowers, with dark purple filaments and the inner part of the corollas. It is found on the coast of Madeira and Porto Santo. It is a poisonous plant, but its leaves can be used externally in the treatment of ulcers. The oil of meimendro can be extracted from this species, as well as from the Hyosciamus niger, a Solanaceae that is not found in Madeira. In some parts of the island, meimendro is also called meiomento.
