Andrade (Francisco de)
He was the son of Francisco de Andrade and was born in Funchal on June 6, 1806, having completed all his studies in this city. By decree of September 4, 1838, he was appointed the permanent professor of Portuguese and Latin grammar, and Portuguese and Latin classics at the national lyceum of Funchal, having previously acted as interim in this position, by virtue of a letter from the Provincial Council of Public Instruction, dated March 23 of the same year. Works: Principles of Portuguese Grammar (Funchal, 1844); Portuguese Grammar for Primary Schools, which had five editions, the first in 1849 and the last in 1879; and Report on the municipal primary education schools of the municipality of Funchal... (Funchal, 1849). He was a councilman of the municipal chamber, secretary, and rector of the lyceum, and one of the most distinguished professors at this secondary education establishment. He left behind some manuscript works. He passed away in Funchal on February 23, 1881.
