Maclaren (Duncan)
He was in Madeira from October 1844 until the summer of 1845 and wrote a short work entitled "A visit to Madeira and Tenerife." This work mentions that from 1844 to 1845, 250 foreigners visited Madeira, including invalids and their accompanying friends and servants. In the two previous years, the number of visitors was estimated to be between 300 and 400, with around 300 English residents on the island at that time.
