Machado
Frutuoso refers to the peak of Lopo Machado, above the hermitage of Nossa Senhora das Neves, but Dr. Azevedo says that the surname Machado comes from João Machado de Miranda, a native of Guimarães, who came to Madeira at the call of his uncle Bartolomeu Machado, as he had no heirs of his wife D. Francisca Velosa, and both instituted an entail of their assets in the descent of the said nephew.
