Lyell (Carlos)

Distinguished English geologist born in Kinordy in 1797 and died in London in 1875. He spent two months in Madeira during the winter of 1853 to 1854, conducting various geological explorations here, almost always accompanied by the German geologist Hartung.

Lyell deals with the geology of Madeira in chapter XLI of his 'Principles of Geology' (1868) and in chapter XXIX of the 'Manual of Elementary Geology' (1855). On page 325 of the Proceedings of the Geological Society, from March 1854, there is an article entitled 'On the Geology of some parts of Madeira', summarizing the main observations made by the wise English geologist on this island.
