In 1911, there were 586 men and 868 women over 80 years old in the entire district of Funchal, distributed as follows:

Of these individuals, 385 males and 578 females were between 80 and 85 years old; 126 males and 177 females were 85 years old; 56 males and 76 females were between 90 and 95; 14 males and 32 females were between 95 and 100; 5 males and 3 females were between 100 and 105; and 2 females were over 105 years old. In 1911, there was a 109-year-old woman living in Achada dos Judeus in S. Vicente.

In March 1920, a man aged 101 died in Madeira, in September another aged 106, and in December a woman aged 103.
Dr. Mittermaier calculated the average human lifespan in Funchal to be 35.16 years, but according to some calculations we made some time ago, this average lifespan rises to 39.8. Dr. Heberden, who was in Madeira in the 18th century, calculated the average human lifespan on the entire island to be 39 years.
