Abelha (Apis mellifica)

Insect of the order Hymenoptera. In Barrow's travel accounts, it is written: 'in the pleasant valleys of Madeira, where a variety of wildflowers abound, the honey from the hives is extraordinarily delicious, being sent to Portugal as one of the most appreciated gifts.' An old provision by the captains-general prohibited the harvesting of the hives before the grape harvest.
