History

Leitão

During the time of Philip I, the magistrate João Leitão came to Madeira, who was the captain-mor of the War and Governor General of the archipelago, but it is unknown whether the Leitões mentioned by Manuel Tomás in the Insulana among the notable families of Madeira are descended from him. In the mid-19th century, the merchant and banker João José Rodrigues Leitão, originally from the mainland, established himself in Funchal, giving rise to another branch of the Leitão family. See Cacongo (I-182).
