Ambrosio (D.)

D. Martinho de Portugal, the first and only archbishop of Funchal, never came to his diocese, but sent the titular bishop of Rocina D. Ambrosio to this island to perform the functions proper to the episcopal ministry. D. Ambrosio stayed in Madeira for approximately a year, from 1538 to 1539, and after the exercise of his ministry, he returned to the kingdom. The disciplinary and canonical observance part had been entrusted to the two visitors Jordão Jorge and Alvaro Dias, who continued in this island after the departure of Bishop D. Ambrosio.
