History

Isabel (Princess) / Isabel (Princesa)

Queen Isabel of Belgium visited Madeira when she was a princess, arriving here on the English steamer Araguaya on July 28, 1909, and departing for the Canary Islands on the German steamer Kamerun on August 6 of the same year. She stayed at the Monte Palace Hotel, where her husband, Prince Albert, the current king of Belgium (1921), had been months before. She visited many points in the city and its surroundings, also taking two sea trips, one to Ponta do Pargo, disembarking in Madalena, and another to Machico, disembarking in this locality and taking an excursion to the site of Portela.

The princess traveled under the name Countess of Rethy and was greeted by the Civil Governor and Military Commander, being accompanied on some walks by the former authority.
