Under this title, a society was founded in Funchal in 1840, with the aim of conducting scientific studies on Madeira. This society lasted a short time, and one of its members, the military engineer António Pedro de Azevedo, published in Flor do Oceano a translation of James Smith's paper on Madeiran geology.
