This family name originates from: Garcia Homem de Sousa, who married Catarina Gonçalves da Câmara, daughter of Zargo; from Francisco Homem de Gouveia, a nobleman of the house of D. Manuel who lived in Estreito da Calheta, where he established an entail in 1529; from Francisco Homem d'El-Rei, who lived in Calheta at the beginning of the 16th century; and from Rui Fernandes Homem, the natural son of Fernão Homem and nephew of the aforementioned Garcia Homem de Sousa.
