History

Henriques Pinto (Luiz de Miranda)

He succeeded his father Luiz M. Henriques Pinto and was the first governor of this archipelago to have the title of governor and captain-general, a designation that was maintained until 1834, and was the last to govern Madeira under Spanish rule. His appointment, made by the vice-queen of Portugal Margarida de Saboia, duchess of Mantua, is dated May 22, 1640, and he took office on June 6 of the same year. It was he who, on January 11, 1641, proclaimed D. João IV on this island. See Restoration of Portugal.
