Hartung (Dr. George)

Distinguished German geologist who visited the Madeira archipelago in the winter of 1853 to 1854. Work: Geologische Beschreibung der Inseln Madeira und Porto Santo, Leipzig, 1864. This is the most comprehensive work published on the geology of the archipelago, also including a report on the Madeiran fossils studied by Professor Carlos Mayer, some of which were unknown to science.
