It seems that Dr. Lourenço Vaz Pereira da Gama was the first to use this family surname on the island. He came to Madeira in the early 16th century to serve as the administrator of deceased and absent persons. He was the father of Dr. Antonio da Gama, whom we discuss in this Elucidário.
