Freitas (José Vicente de)
Born in Calheta on January 22, 1869, he belongs to an old family from that village. He is a lieutenant colonel of infantry and was part of the Portuguese expeditionary force that fought in France. (1921)
He was appointed civil governor of this district by decree of February 9, 1915, taking office on the 22nd of the same month and serving until May 15 of the same year. On April 28, 1918, he was elected as a deputy for Madeira.
He published the following works: Atlas of drawing, descriptive geometry and art notions, Lisbon 1908; Atlas of drawing, organized in harmony with the programs of 1905, Lisbon, 1908, 2 volumes, the first for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd classes and the second for the 4th and 5th classes of the lyceums; Drawing Compendium for primary education, Lisbon, 1903, 2 volumes, the first for the 1st and 2nd classes and the second for the 3rd and 4th classes; Guide and map of Lisbon on a scale of 1/7,500, 1906 edition; and Reading book for the 4th grade of primary schools, with the collaboration of F. Veyrier, Lisbon, 1910.
He was the president of the Lisbon City Council and head of the government for several years.
