Folhado (Clethra arborea)

A small tree of the Ericaceae family, common in Camacha and many other parts of Madeira. It has oblong or oblong-lanceolate leaves, ferruginous-pubescent on the petioles and on the veins of the lower surface, and white, aromatic flowers arranged in clusters forming a panicle. The new trunks and shoots of this tree produce magnificent walking sticks or staffs, widely used on the island, and the wood is used to make spoons, spindles, etc..

The folhado is a peculiar tree in Madeira and is the only species of the Clethra genus that lives spontaneously outside of America.
